How Does Dowsing Work? Does It Really Work Anyway?

Thank author of this post/comment

Have you ever seen a person walking around a seemingly empty place, only with a Y-shaped stick in his hands? That is a peculiar sight, isn't it? But what you might probably not know is that he is doing the ancient divination practice of dowsing.

What is dowsing?

Dowsing is the ancient practice of finding things hidden underground, like water, treasures, oil, minerals, and precious metals without the use of scientific tools that we have today. The Y-shaped rod is called the dowsing rod although some dowsing practitioners do it without the use of any divination tools, while some use more traditional dowsing tools like pendulums in order to find things underground.

When dowsers emerged during the 16th century (mind that the practice of dowsing has been there for thousands of years already), not too many people thought highly of the activity, more so today in this modern age. However, dowsers continue to dowse claiming that they have skills needed in order to find things that radiate and emanate from the ground. Tests have been done in the past to scientifically conclude if dowsing really works or not. However, no reproducible proof in a test-controlled environment ever came out.

The Dowsing Rod

The dowsing rod is usually a Y-shaped twig, traditionally from hazel or witch-hazel trees. Some even use peach or willow tree branches. The dowser then holds the two shorter branches of the twig and raises it in a horizontal position. The longer end of the twig will twitch and even face down while a dowser walks slowly around the place of interest. This indicates that there may be something underneath the ground.

Modern-day dowsers now use L-shaped metal rods that has the longer segment pointing forward. In a similar way, everytime there is a disturbance in the relative position of this segment, there is the possibility that something can be found in the ground.

Whether dowsing really works or not is just up in the air. The practice does not seem harmful and may actually be a good hobby. So it's always up to you to determine if dowsing works or not.
